THE JOURNEY OF A REFUGEE
Echoes in the Wind
Echoes in the Wind
Written and directed by Andrew Taylor
The
Journey of a Refugee is a thirteen-minute short play that I wrote and
that my students (ages 13 to 15) in PFAC Palawan acted and performed in the year
1989-1990.
This play is a story of Tran Le Van Huy, a Vietnamese child, son of a military officer who served in the former Republic of South Vietnam, who journeyed and took a risk crossing the China Sea leaving the home, family and friends he loved in order to find peace and freedom in another land. In 1992, this play was expanded to a one-hour stage drama and re-titled "Echoes in the Wind". This 1992 play was watched by over 1000 asylum seekers in PFAC. It brought tears to a lot of people in the audience especially the seniors who felt that the play was a realistic account of their own experience.
Echoes in the wind is about the voices of the boat people who died in high seas or in the hands of the merciless, greedy pirates and who did not make it to their destinations. The actual sound track and voice recording of the 1992 play are still in tact today.
