Long Live, My Refugee Friends!

This picture was taken the day Hien left the refugee center in Palawan.

PALAWAN

It was a great memory of a first love
of some sort
Life was simple as the ocean breeze
Sipping a coke
and hanging out with friends
were all I cared
O
Summer here seemed to be longer
than any other place on earth
The island was our playground
The sand was pristine,
and the warm ocean always welcomed us
with its gentle waves
O
It was more like a picnic for the youngsters
than a refugee camp
Maybe I was luckier than other children,
but I never had a worry
There were food, shelter,
and people who cared for me
I was loved and content
O
Time has passed since
The island is still waiting,
but the people have moved on
Yet, I still wonder and search
for whatever I had left behind
Maybe it was the love
I had always taken for granted
or the soul of my youth
which I had lost a long time ago
O
Long live my refugee friends.

  1. Hi Teacher Andrew,

It's really exciting to see you on facebook even though I am not your former student. Phong is my brother.

I really enjoy reading your blog regarding PFAC. I miss that place so much. I spent most of my teen years in the camp. It was like my second homeland.

Thank you very much for devoting your time, energy, and passion to the HTC Vietnamese students. You inspire us, and I can tell that your students love you so much!

I'd like to contact teacher Babes. Could you please email me her email and phone number? Thank you,

    Regards,
    Dieu Thao

  2. Hi Andy,
It was such good time to see you in Nha Trang and it happened like a dream. Until now, I can't believe that we met here where we could share our memories in the camp. I would love to have a website for the whole of this one and please give me a "go" to do so. I want to keep this one alive. Cheers. Hieu
